   Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria photo

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is the capital and has very much a city feel to it, being Spain’s seventh largest. It has an beautiful historic centre, La Vegueta, as well as busy bar and restaurant lined beach promenade, Playa de las Canteras. Las Palmas combines a international atmosphere with an Spanish environment.

Las Palmas is full of interesting places to see and things to do. For instance, the house of Christopher Columbus Casa/Museo de Colón, in which he stayed during his stay on Gran Canaria, the Catedral de Santa Ana & Museum which is a cathedral dating from the 15th century and the Canary Island Museum which houses a collection of remains from the Guanche culture from pre-Columbian times.

A more artisitic venue is the Atlantic Centre of Modern Art (CAAM), which exhibits modern art.

During the evening, along with the many bars and restaurants to be found, a visit to the Casino de Las Palmas is an interesting diversion.

Agaete Gran Canaria

Agaete Gran Canaria is a small fishing town on the north west coast of the island, with beaches secluded between cliffs and Puerto de las Nieves nearby boasting a good range of seafood restaurants and Cafe’s. Around Agaete, there are valleys and ravines full of vegetation and tropical fruit plantations. In the wilder parts, the terrain is cut into artificial terraces, to aid cultivation.

Along the coastline of Agaete, you will find Dedo de Dios (God’s Finger), a basalt monolith jutting up the sea. There is also the archaeological excavation site of Malpais.

Puerto de las Nieves has black sand beaches, some of which practice nudism. There are also varied water sports available. Things to see in this area include the Church of la Concepción and the botanical gardens of Huerto de las Flores.
